Medvedev served well in the second set and earned a break in the third game after Sinner’s forehand error. The Italian moved in front with a break in the third game after a drop shot winner. Sinner cemented the lead with an ace a few minutes later and made another push on return in the next one.

Daniil lost the ground behind the initial shot, embracing a wayward drop shot and suffering the second straight break. Jannik served for the set in game eight and produced a hold at 15, introducing a decider after three hours and 16 minutes.

The servers claimed the opening two games after deuces, and the Russian made a decisive push at 2-1. The Italian sprayed a forehand error, losing serve and falling behind. Medvedev cemented it after deuces in game five and delivered a comfortable hold in game seven for 5-2.

Jannik extended the battle with a hold in game eight before Daniil sealed the deal with a backhand winner in the next one, sending world no. 1 packing. Sinner will now focus on his first Olympic Games in Paris, missing the previous event in Tokyo three years ago.
