Jets sign first-round pick Olu Fashanu to $20.5 million contract

The Jets gave their insurance plan his financial security.

First-round draft pick Olu Fashanu, who might not start as a rookie if all goes according to plan, signed his fully guaranteed four-year, $20.51 million contract Monday, The Post confirmed.

He is expected to count $3.27 million against the salary cap in 2024, per OverTheCap.com.

As is the case with all NFL first-round picks, Fashanu’s contract includes an additional fifth-year team option that must be exercised or declined after his first three seasons.

The Jets traded down from No. 10 to No. 11 and drafted Fashanu, 21, to be their left tackle of the future.

In the short term, however, the Penn State product will back up injury-prone All-Pro Tyron Smith — who hasn’t played a full season since 2015 — and learn to play on the right side so that he also can fill in if needed for Morgan Moses, as he returns from offseason shoulder surgery.

Head coach Robert Saleh does not ask much of his draft picks during rookie minicamp, but Fashanu was rehabbing a quad injury first suffered at the NFL Combine on a side field with trainers when the Jets gathered from May 3-4.
