George Kambosos Jr. has arrived in Perth, Australia, to fight Vasily Lomachenko for the vacant IBF lightweight title on May 12th at the RAC Arena on ESPN.
Can Kambosos pull off another upset?
IBO 135-lb champion Kambosos (21-2, 10 KOs) is going to have to put on the same kind of performance as he did in his upset victory over Teofimo Lopez to have a shot at defeating Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs), who is highly motivated to capture the vacant IBF belt.
Most boxing fans feel this is a cut-and-dried situation in which Lomachenko will dominate Kambosos, beat him like a drum, and win a one-sided 12-round unanimous decision.
Although the 30-year-old Kambosos is younger and much bigger than the 36-year-old Lomachenko, there’s a massive difference in talent between the two.
Loma is on another level talent-wise, and the only way he loses this fight against Kambosos is if he gets the business, like in his last fight against Devin Haney, where he beat him but the judges went with the hometown Las Vegas fighter.
Is Kambosos a one-hit wonder?
Kambosos is viewed by the boxing world as being a classic example of a ‘one-hit wonder,’ a fighter who got lucky beating a ring-rusty, injured, and mentally unfocused Teofimo in November 2021, beating him by a 12-round split decision at Madison Square Garden in New York.
I think a motivated and healthy Teofimo would have clowned Kambosos, beating him worse than Devin Haney did in his two fights.
The millionaire Kambosos has carved out a nice fortune from his win over Teofimo, to make excellent cash in his two fights against Haney, both of which he lost, and his match against Maxi Hughes.
With the money he has made from those four fights, Kambosos is wealthy and can retire in luxury regardless of whether he’s trounced by Lomachenko on May 12th.
Kambosos speaks on arrival
“It’s great to be here in Perth [Australia]. All the hard work has been done,” said George Kambosos Jr. to Fighthype in his arrival in Perth, Australia for his fight against Vasily Lomachenko on May 12th for the vacant IBF lightweight title.
“We’re extremely focused. We had a tremendous camp and it’s time to fight. That’s what we’re here for. We’re here to fight. We’re not here for a holiday. We’re not here to do any fishing. We’re here for a fight, a true war. So, May 12th,” said Kambosos.
