After Kansas State baseball was snubbed from the 2023 NCAA Tournament last season, Pete Hughes’ group is doing everything they can to eliminate the possibility of missing the tournament in back-to-back seasons.
After taking down the BYU Cougars in walk-off fashion Thursday night, Kansas State head coach Pete Hughes was asked about his team’s tournament chances, which led to a fiery response from Hughes.

“We’re .500 in the league,” Hughes said. “Probably have a 35 RPI. If I had Oklahoma on my jersey or Texas Tech, like last year, when those records weren’t as good as what I just described to you, we wouldn’t even be asked that question. That’s what I think about it. Our resume’s better than those two teams from our league that got in last year.”
Hughes’ group currently boasts a 14-14 record in Big 12 Conference play, holding an overall record of 30-21. The team currently sits in eighth place in the league with two games to go.
Hughes finished his thoughts by saying, “You just gotta keep winning games. You keep the decision out of a committee’s hands, and you make your case sound. The only way to do that when you have Kansas State on your jersey is to keep winning games. That’s why tonight was huge.”
Kansas State will have two more opportunities to improve its resume ahead of the Big 12 Baseball Tournament. Next, it will take the field against the BYU Cougars on Friday, May 17th, at 6:00 PM CT.
