Luka Modric has signed a 12-month contract extension at Real Madrid that will see him play for the European champions for another season.
The 38-year-old went from key player to more of a squad role last season as Madrid claimed a league and Champions League double, making 18 La Liga starts as coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for more youthful options in the centre of midfield.
But Modric’s influence in the dressing room is still thought to be pivotal to any future success, particularly with fellow veteran Toni Kroos retiring.

The Croatia captain has won six Champions League trophies and four La Liga titles during a glittering 12-year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu that also saw him land the Ballon d’Or in 2018.
He is a stalwart of Ancelotti who said of Modric earlier this month: “I’ve never had a problem with him.
“As well as being a top player, one of the best in the world, he’s even more spectacular as a person. We’ve never had a problem, and we never will.”
Madrid has made 534 appearances for Madrid in all competitions, scoring 39 goals.
