I received some news over social media a few days ago.
Susie Wilson-Rowe, the former Honda Award winner for the Maryland field hockey team, who is also a top player in the game of cricket, is currently in the fight of her life.
According to the media post, Rowe has recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer which has spread to her spine. If any of you know about the rate that cancers tend to metastasize, this is not the most hopeful sign for her.
I got to know Susie in the 2000s as she made a name for herself as a defensive back and a corner striker at the University of Maryland. She was tremendous in both roles, and she eventually played for England at the U-21 level and had a good club career.
She also was a fine cricketer, playing for her country in a one-day international and 22 Twenty20 matches, and played for County Kent in the domestic league before eventually playing in the Hundred short-form cricket promotion with the London Spirit.
Wilson-Rowe lives in London with her spouse Jennifer and their son, Zach. There will be a lot of bills for her care, as well as for child care and education, for a number of years. Even with government support, it is not unlimited. The family needs financial support.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the Wilson-Rowe family, Please click here and give what you can.
Susie, if you’re reading this, I send love and energy from one cancer patient to another. We got this.
