Michigan starting QB race a ‘two-man battle’ ahead Week 1 opener vs. Fresno State, insider shares timeline

Michigan‘s quarterback battle remains undecided with the 2024 season opener just days away. Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore said Monday that a decision should come soon, as the competition enters final practices before the Week 1 game against Fresno State Saturday in Ann Arbor. National college football reporter Matt Zenitz confirmed that it could be a couple more days before Michigan’s starting quarterback is named. He added that the four-man race has narrowed coming out of fall camp.

“It’s a two-man battle, at this point, between Alex Orji, who’s been the favorite in that competition for an extended period of time, and Davis Warren, who’s gone from being a former walk-on to somebody that people Michigan feel like he is talented enough and has grown enough that would be capable of starting at a number of different programs around the country,” Zenitz said Monday on CBS Sports HQ.

Orji, who served as the backup to national champion and eventual first-round NFL Draft pick J.J. McCarthy last season, appeared in six games exclusively as a runner. Orji attempted just one pass in the previous two years at Michigan. He carried the ball 15 times for 86 yards and a touchdown during his limited action in 2023.
