The New York Giants quarterback search first centered on a Matthew Stafford trade, only to see the Los Angeles Rams retain their face of the franchise at the last minute. With Stafford off the board, a new option seems to be at the center of the Giants’ focus.
New York would love to land quarterback Cam Ward in the 2025 NFL Draft, but a Week 17 win over the Indianapolis Colts took that out of their control. Now, the Giants have to hope the Tennessee Titans are willing to trade down from the first overall pick. Otherwise, either Tennessee or the Cleveland Browns (No. 2 overall pick) will be taking Ward.

Given the sizable talent gap many around the NFL believe there is between Ward and Shedeur Sanders, it’s highly unlikely that the Buffaloes signal-caller is taken with the third overall pick. With so much uncertainty regarding the ability to land Ward, New York is eyeing a veteran in NFL free agency.
According to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, the Giants “have been in on” quarterback Russell Wilson for a while. While Aaron Rodgers is also a target in the team’s quarterback search, Wilson seems to be the preferred option right now for New York.

- Russell Wilson stats (ESPN):Â 95.6 QB rating, 16-5 TD-INT ratio 2,482 passing yards, 7.4 yards per attempt, 63.7% completion rate, 155 rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns in 11 games
The interest is reportedly mutual with Wilson viewing the Giants as a backup option if he doesn’t re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. With Pittsburgh reportedly more focused on re-signing Justin Fields, who is also drawing significant interest from the New York Jets, there’s a real chance Wilson could be the Giants starting quarterback next season.

Even if Wilson is signed, NFL rumors in early March have all suggested the Giants front office wants to move up for the No. 1 pick. It could create a scenario where Wilson signs a short-term contract with New York, potentially a one-year deal, with the team trading up for Ward and having him developed by Brian Daboll until he’s ready to take over.
