Now that NFL Week 17 of the 2024 regular season is in the books, we still have a few questions to answer about the postseason picture and NFC Championship Odds.
We don’t know who has won the NFC North, which means both the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could end up taking that fourth seed as division champs.
The Buccaneers have a one-game lead and are in the postseason with a win over New Orleans, while the Falcons lost in overtime to Washington, letting a 17-7 halftime lead slip away, and now need help.
In the NFC North, both the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings are 14-2, and they meet next week to settle the division title – meaning that a 14-win team will enter the playoffs as a wild-card team and open on the road for the first time in league history.
We have the sports betting odds for each of the eight teams alive for the postseason below, as well as thoughts on some of the contenders.
NFC Championship Odds at Week 17 NFL 2024/25 Season
- Detroit Lions +192
- Philadelphia Eagles +330
- Minnesota Vikings +390
- Green Bay Packers +740
- L.A. Rams +1175
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers +1450
- Washington Commanders +1600
- Atlanta Falcons +13000
Detroit Lions
The Lions have two potential problems on their hands – the first is the defense. They have 13 defenders on injured reserve, and that played a part in the 475 yards that the San Francisco 49ers gained on them on Monday night without Christian McCaffrey. Safety Kerby Joseph did pick off Brock Purdy twice, but when the Lions didn’t get turnovers, they gave up points.
The Vikings put up 26.4 points per game, which means there will be plenty of challenges for Detroit in Week 18. On offense, quarterback Jared Goff is clutch on third and fourth downs, with 17 touchdowns on those downs this year without a single interception. Against San Francisco, all three of his scoring passes came on third or fourth down.
Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings are an interesting value pick to come out of the conference here. They could enter the postseason with the top seed for the first time since 1998, and one huge reason is the play of Sam Darnold. He threw an interception in the third quarter that gave the Packers a short field and, eventually, their first touchdown.
On the Vikings’ next possession, Darnold showed all kinds of poise, going 5 for 5 and finishing the drive with a touchdown pass to Cam Akers. Akers came on for Aaron Jones as the starting tailback went down with an apparent injury. He scored the Vikings’ last touchdown and made a circus catch on a low throw from Darnold to move the chains with 1:44 left in regulation and put the win on ice.
L.A. Rams
Four weeks ago, the Rams torched Buffalo’s defense for 44 points in a shocking win. Since then, the team has scored 44 points combined in their games. They have won all three of those games, including a victory over Arizona in which they only scored 13, but that’s not a trend that will last long in the postseason.
In 11 of their games this season, they have not scored in the first quarter. The only team with more of those games is the woeful, 4-12, Chicago Bears. They finish the season against Seattle, but expect Carson Wentz to drive the bus at quarterback, since the Rams have clinched a playoff spot.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Which of the Buccaneers team would show up in the playoffs – the one that torched the Chargers and the Panthers, or the one that made the Cowboys look solid? Consistency is the team’s biggest problem, especially in the secondary.
Safety Mike Edwards and cornerbacks Zyon McCollum, Tykee Smith and Jordan Whitehead all had problems keeping up with Mike Thielen, allowing him to find the end zone twice. The Bucs now need to stop the Saints to get into the playoffs.
