The Kansas City Chiefs will look to become the first team ever to win three consecutive Super Bowls when they face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Caesars Superdome in Super Bowl LIX.
These two teams met two years ago in one of the most entertaining Super Bowls of all time, where the Chiefs were victorious 38-35. Most of the big-name stars from Super Bowl LVII are still with their respective teams, but the biggest difference this year is that the Eagles have Saquon Barkley.
With Barkley on the Eagles and rookie Xavier Worthy on the Chiefs, Super Bowl LIX has the potential to be even more explosive than the previous matchup. In fact, we could see a few record-breaking performances.
Here are three Super Bowl records that could be broken this Sunday.
Saquon Barkley breaks Timmy Smith’s Super Bowl record of 204 rushing yards

Timmy Smith’s 204 rushing yards gained in Super Bowl XXII in Washington’s 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos still stands as the most rushing yards in Super Bowl history. But that record could be broken on Sunday, as Saquon Barkley has been unstoppable over the last month.
In the Eagles’ three playoff games, the superstar running back, who will turn 28 on Super Bowl Sunday, has rushed for 442 yards on 66 carries with five touchdowns.
During the regular season, the Chiefs’ run defense was eighth in the league, giving up 101 yards on the ground. But they struggled at times in the AFC Championship game against the Bills, as Buffalo gained 147 yards on the ground.
If the Eagles are going to be victorious on Sunday, they’re going to have to ride the quads of Barkley. Including the playoffs, he has two games where he rushed for over 200 yards, and he stands a good chance of doing that again and, in the process, setting a new Super Bowl record for most rushing yards.

Patrick Mahomes breaks Eli Manning’s record of consecutive passes completed to start Super Bowl (9)

Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid are by far the best quarterback and head coach tandem in the NFL today. This is why they’re on the brink of a three-peat, and why, including the postseason, the Chiefs are 23-1 in games that Mahomes has started. It’s always a tall task facing the Chiefs, but it becomes even more daunting when you give Mahomes and Reid two weeks to prepare.
They know it’s imperative to get off to a fast start so that they can grab the momentum of the game and put pressure on the Eagles to try to match them point for point. Expect Mahomes to start the game by throwing short passes to his favorite target, Travis Kelce, and to his running backs coming out of the backfield. This will result in Mahomes breaking Eli Manning’s record of nine consecutive completions to start a Super Bowl that he set in Super Bowl XLVI.

Chiefs and Eagles break record for most combined points (75)

The 73 combined points the Eagles and Chiefs scored in Super Bowl LVII were the third most in Super Bowl history, only trailing the 74 points scored in Super Bowl LII by the Eagles and New England Patriots, and the 75 combined points scored in Super Bowl XXIX between the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers.
There’s an old saying that defense wins championships, but the way rules favor offenses nowadays, you better have an explosive offense if you want to win a championship. Both the Eagles and Chiefs have added some explosive offensive players to their roster since Super Bowl LVII, and with the way Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes are playing, there’s a good chance they’ll set a new record for most combined points.
Hurts accounted for four total touchdowns in the Eagles’ 55-23 thrashing of the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, and Mahomes always makes a play when it’s needed most.
The Eagles had the number one defense in the league this year, giving up just 278 yards per game, and the Chiefs have arguably the best defensive coordinator in the league in Steve Spagnuolo, and had the ninth-ranked defense overall. Expect both defenses to be overmatched by the high-powered offenses.
