NHL Futures Options and Conference Title Odds for 2024/25 Season

NHL Futures | Here are a sports betting question – should you “blind bet” the under on NHL games? The most common goal total for a game is 6 ½ goals.

The way the prop works, a game that goes into overtime and ends in 4-3 fashion would go “over,” but a game that goes to a shootout tied at three goals apiece will go “under” that number. This year, about 30% of NHL games have featured a 5 ½-goal total.

If you look at all the games through November 12, 2024, 125 games have gone “under” and 117 have gone “over.”

If you look at games with a 6 ½-goal total, the “under” has hit 94 times while only 70 have hit over. When the total has been 5 ½ goals, the “over” has paid 47 times while the “under” has paid just 31.

So for now, it looks like blind betting the “over” on 5 ½-goal totals and the “under” on 6 ½-goal totals pays off, but don’t be surprised if books start adjusting their methods.

For each team’s odds of winning their conference title and heading to the Stanley Cup Final, as well as our thoughts on some promising futures opportunities, read on.

Nashville Predators

The Predators had their Stanley Cup odds drop from +4000 to +1800 back in the summer when they signed Jonathan Marchessault, Brady Skjei and Steven Stamkos, dropping $100 million in the deals. So far, that spending spree has not worked, as the Predators are off to a 5-9-2 record. They’re in the NHL basement with the Montreal Canadiens.

Their roster upgraded, but their five-on-five play has fallen off the table. Their goal differential is -22 in five-on-five. Some of that has had to do with bad-luck bounces, but they are also failing to meet their expected goals tally. There’s plenty of time to climb out of that hole, but Minnesota and Winnipeg have sprinted out of the gate, making it harder to catch up.

New Jersey Devils

The Devils also added a lot of talent in the off-season, headlined by Jacob Markstrom in net. After free agency weighed in, their Cup odds dropped from +2200 to +1200. Markstrom has started the year playing decently, but not to the level that his contract predicted.

The Devils are off to an 11-6-2 start, and Markstrom is 18th in goals saved above average (2.88) and 25th in save percentage (.908). He’s not standing on his head, but the Devils don’t need a miracle worker thanks to their quality elsewhere.

Andrei Vasilevskiy

Can Vasilevskiy win the Vezina Trophy? He had the worst season of his career last year after getting a late start due to back surgery. However, he did win 30 games for the seventh straight season, and you can find odds at or above +1000 for him to be the league’s top netminder.

Calgary Flames

Will the Flames miss the playoffs? That number right now is around -400, so it’s not the biggest value bet, but if you pair it with them finishing under 81 ½ points (-125), you can get a parlay that makes more sense.

Last year, they finished with 81 points, and while they’re off to an 8-6-3 start (19 points) through 17 games, which would translate to just over this total if they play at this pace, they are viewed as likely sellers at the trade deadline, which means a decrease in wins…and points.
