NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens Trade Targets, and the San Jose Sharks Coaching Search

A couple of trade targets for the Montreal Canadiens

Marco D’Amico of Montreal Hockey Now: The Montreal Canadiens will be looking for some scoring help this offseason and they’re armed with the cap space, draft picks, and prospects. There are a couple of forwards that could be on the trade market this offseason.

Martin Necas – Carolina Hurricanes – The pending RFAs time in Carolina could be coming to an end according to Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts Podcast. A source has said that the Canadiens have inquired. He could be a sign-and-trade candidate to get the eight years.

The Canadiens may want to come in around Nick Suzuki‘s $7.85 million. Would that range be okay for Necas?

Nikolaj Ehlers – Winnipeg Jets – Murat Ates of The Athletic reported the Jets could shop the forward before the draft. The Jets could be looking to bolster their blue line. Ehlers is 28 years old and has scored 20+ goals in seven of nine NHL seasons. What Ehlers wants on his next contract would also play a role in the Canadiens’ interest level as they don’t want to overpay.

The San Jose Sharks get permission to speak with Marco Sturm

TSN: Pierre LeBrun with Jay Onrait on where the San Jose Sharks are in their coaching search and a candidate in Marco Sturm

Onrait: “Let’s talk about the San Jose Sharks. They are in need of a head coach. And is it possible Pierre that if you’re a Sharks fan, and boy, if you’re a Sharks fan, you’ve dealt with some pretty rough times the last few years. Is it possible that a familiar face from the past might at least get a chance to interview for that head coaching job?”

LeBrun: “Yeah, what we’ve confirmed is that the Sharks have sought and received permission from the LA Kings to speak with Marco Sturm. A former shark star, very popular player in that market.

So I kind of love this as a fit. Marco Sturm, who has been a head coach with the Kings AHL team and cut his teeth there. And obviously with Jim Miller’s higher kind of roadblocked, you know, in terms of getting that head coach job in LA.

So it does, I’m not saying he’s necessarily going to get the job in San Jose. The Sharks, I’m told are still going through their process and looking at a different options, but they do intend to have Sturm as part of that, part of that process. So we’ll see where it leads to.”

Onrait: “I love that idea, too. I think it’s a terrific idea. I hope it works out.”
