North Carolina Trustee Advocating for UNC to Join Higher-Revenue League

While the North Carolina Tar Heels have been the subject of rumors and speculation regarding the possibility of leaving the ACC, one member of the board of trustees is openly calling for the decision to leave.

According to a report from TheActionNetwork’s Brett McMurphy, UNC trustee Dave Boliek is openly advocating for the Tar Heels to leave the ACC for a higher-revenue league.

“That’s what we need to do,” Boliek said. “We need to do everything we can to get there, or the alternative is the ACC is going to have to reconstruct itself. I think all options are on the table”

While conference realignment has drastically altered things across the nation, the ACC has remained relatively unchanged. The league has yet to lose a major contributor like North Carolina, but it did heighten concerns among athletic directors and presidents for some of the teams at the top by adding the likes of SMU, Stanford, and Cal.

Boliek continued, “Carolina’s ability to maintain excellence at a high level is going to require really prudent budgeting, revenue models, and potential cost cutting. A lot of it is due to the revenue—or lack thereof—that we’re not receiving from the ACC deal.”

McMurphy also reported that due to some restlessness among the UNC Board of Trustees, the board approved an audit of the school’s athletic department on Monday.

While college athletics among administrations and programs can change quickly, UNC is just another team to watch in the wacky world of conference realignment.
