Novak breezes through opening round at Wimbledon – Novak Djokovic

Second seed Novak Djokovic started his 2024 Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday, easing past Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

The seven-time former titlist moved well in first match since knee surgery. The 37-year-old Belgrade native showed no sign of discomfort as he cruised to a one-hour, 58-minute victory under the Centre Court roof.

Novak broke his rival’s serve twice in each set to book his place in the second round. He won 90 per cent (35/39) of points behind his first serve.

“Coming into Wimbledon for me this year was very different because of the knee. I am just really glad with how I played and how I felt on the court. I didn’t know how everything was going to unfold on the court. I’m extremely glad with the way I felt and the way I played today. Thank you all for coming out and supporting,” Djokovic said.

Match statistics: aces (10-4), double faults (2-5), winners (32-25), unforced errors (16-30), total points won (98-56).

Novak will play against home wild card Jacob Fearnley, the world number 277.
