Olympic Climbing Odds at the 2024 Summer Games now has two competitions per gender: boulder and lead combined climbing, and speed climbing. All the events will take place at Le Bourget, north of Paris.
The combined event will see participants compete in both lead and boulder, and the rankings will come from adding the points from both specialties.
The goal is to get as high as an athlete can on the wall.
Points are awarded for validated moves or zones, while failures will see points deduced.
The top possible score is 200. Speed climbing is a race to the top of a 15-meter wall, with a qualification round followed by races between pairs of opponents, moving through a bracket to the finals.

What’s different for 2024?
Sport climbing debuted as a medal event at the Tokyo 2020 Games. It combined boulder, lead and speed in one combined event.
The points from each event were combined, and the first gold medalists were Janja Garnbret and Alberto Gines Lopez. Now, speed climbing is a separate event.
Who are the top athletes at the Paris Games for Olympic Climbing?
Veddriq Leonardo and Katibin Kiromal, both from Indonesia, dominated the sport in 2022. They led the World Cup rankings, and Koiromal set a world record at Chamonix, finishing with just 5.00 seconds.
In Europe, the 2022 champion at speed climbing was Ukraine’s Danyil Boldyrev.
For the women’s side, the top name is Aleksandra Miroslaw of Poland. She won the European championship in 2022 and set a world record in 2023 (6.53 seconds). Aleksandra Kalucka, another Polish climber, passed her to take the top ranking in the world.
Emma Hunt won speed climbing at the World Games and is extremely consistent.
The rankings in boulder and lead climbing are still fairly new because the splitting of the climbing events is such a recent occurrence.
There was a Boulder World Cup in 2022, and Japan’s men’s team swept the podium as Ogata Yoshiyukik, Fujii Kokoro and Homma Taisei went 1-2-3.
Mejdi Schalck of France and Yannick Flohe of Germany are the two climbers who seem to have the best chance of breaking the Japanese hammerlock on the sport.
On the women’s side, Janja Garnbret looks to make it two gold medals. Natalia Grossman and Brooke Raboutou of the United States were 1-2 on the Combined World Ranking at the close of 2022.
But can they stop Garnbret? Other women to watch for including Nonaka Miho in boulder and Seo Chaehyun in lead, both of whom did quite well in 2022.
