Trainer Andre Rozier believes Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya has thrown “coal in the fire” by angering Canelo Alvarez with his comments this week ahead of the Mexican star’s title defense against Jaime Munguia tonight on PPV.
De La Hoya’s Fuel for the Fire
Rozier feels that instead of De La Hoya throwing Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) off his game, which may have been his intention, it’s going to amp him up even more to where poor Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) will be the one that pays the price tonight in their fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
De La Hoya lashed Canelo during the final press conference, telling the assembled media that Munguia had volunteered to step in for him when he tested positive for PEDs for one of his fights against Gennadiy Golovkin and that Golden Boy had built Alvarez when he was with them.
Canelo was so angry by the time De La Hoya finished trashing him that jumped out of his chair and looked ready to tear into the 51-year-old Oscar.
The question is now whether Canelo’s anger will affect his performance tonight against Munguia.
Rozier: Canelo’s Anger Will Focus Him, Not Distract Him
“He was really putting out some heinous information, and Canelo, I haven’t seen him angry like this in a long time. He was on fire,” said trainer Andre Rozier to Fighthype about Canelo Alvarez being angry by some of the comments promoter Oscar De La Hoya made during the final press conference this week.
“He was cursing, and you don’t see him doing that too much. Once in a blue moon. At this point, it makes it really interesting to see what happens in the ring with Canelo and Munguia in the ring. Canelo is so mad that Munguia is going to have to pay the price for that assault from Oscar.”
Rozier could be wrong. Due to Canelo’s cardio problems, he can’t physically fight harder than he’s done in the past without gassing early against Munguia. When a person has got cardio problems, it doesn’t matter if you anger them. They’re going to be limited. if anything, it could hurt Canelo if he pushes his body within its limits tonight.
“I think Canelo is on his game, and something like this won’t get him off his game,” said Rozier when asked if Canelo would be unsettled tonight. He might have thrown more coal in the fire,” Andre said about De La Hoya. While the fire was set at medium, he jacked it up super high right now.”
