OU Baseball’s Skip Johnson Staying in Norman Despite Texas A&M Rumors

While Jim Schlossnagle’s seismic move from Texas A&M to accept the head coaching job at Texas made some sizable shifts in the college baseball coaching carousel, one program out of the woods is Oklahoma.

Oklahoma head baseball coach Skip Johnson was linked to the Texas A&M opening, but according to multiple reports, Johnson is signing an extension with OU and will remain in Norman.

According to Sooners Illustrated’s Josh Callaway, “Johnson was due for a contract extension and a raise this offseason before the Texas A&M job ever became open. But, after [Jim] Schlossnagle left, Johnson quickly became an option to take over in College Station. However, after meeting with Oklahoma, the two parties have come to a place where both are satisfied to continue the partnership into the most important stretch in the program’s history.”

Johnson has spent the previous seven seasons in Norman from 2018-2024 and will bring an overall winning record to the SEC in 2025. Johnson led the Sooners to an overall record of 229-153 (.599) and a conference record of 85-65 (.567).

In 2024, Johnson had one of his best seasons at Oklahoma, leading his group to host an NCAA Regional, the Sooners’ first hosting privileges since 2010. The team finished 40-21 on the season before failing to advance to the Super Regional Round.

Despite some shaky rumors, Oklahoma Baseball retained their head coach as the pair get set to venture to the SEC in the near future.
