Presidents Cup, Mike Weir Completes His Staff

In just over a month, the fifteenth edition of the Presidents Cup will begin, which will be played on the Royal Montreal Golf Club course. Yesterday, Mike Weir, Captain of the International Team, announced the name of his fifth and final vice-captain: Shigeki Maruyama.

The Japanese joins Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman (previous Captain at Quail Hollow Club), Geoff Ogilvy and Camilo Villegas (a true parterre de roi, Editor’s note) on Weir’s staff. Maruyama took part as a player in the 1998 editions (the only victory, albeit a very clear one, of the International Team) and 2000 (victory of Team USA led by Ken Venturi), recording six victories, five of which (clear round, to borrow a term from equestrianism) in the 1998 edition played at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club, and two defeats.

He also served as vice-captain in the 2013 edition, alongside Nick Price, who led the Internationals for three consecutive editions (2013-2015-2017).

Presidents Cup, statement

The Captain said: “I am thrilled to announce Shigeki as my fifth assistant for the 2024 Presidents Cup” “The records he has set in this competition speak for themselves but, more importantly, he will add a trusted voice to our staff and someone who can inspire the 12 players with his unwavering support and dynamic personality”.

The new vice-captain said: “Representing the International Team in the Presidents Cup first as a player in 1998 and 2000 and then as an assistant to the Captain in 2013 has been one of the most valuable experiences of my career” “I am honored that Captain Weir has given me the opportunity to be a part of this special brotherhood once again” “I am looking forward to a great week in Montreal to help create an incredible atmosphere for our players and fans in Canada”.

The BMW Championship that starts today will close the automatic qualification period, both for Team USA and for the Internationals.
