Rafael Nadal has collected many remarkable records during his glorious career. The last of which, as highlighted by the OptaAce Twitter profile, is truly particular. Among the many records that the Spaniard has achieved, the 14 titles at the Roland Garros is the most famous, but there are others that certainly need to be analysed. This one in particular.
Nadal has won all 40 matches he has played in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments against players who came from qualifiers or lucky losers. Rafa, in every ATP Masters 1000 tournament in which he has participated, has never lost against a qualifier or against a lucky loser. In Rome, in his first round, Nadal could increase this statistic and take it to 41-0. There is only one other player who has played ten or more matches in the ATP Masters 1000 against qualifiers or lucky losers without losing a match. This is Boris Becker, who has a record of 13-0 since this tournament format was introduced in 1990.
40 – Rafael Nadal is undefeated against qualifiers/lucky losers in ATP Masters 1000 events (40-0) – Boris Becker is the only other player with 10+ such meetings without a single defeat since the format’s introduction in 1990 (13-0). Draw.#IBI24 | @atptour @InteBNLdItalia https://t.co/cqyvrDfDoF

Nadal will play the ATP tournament in Rome for the last time. A tournament that gave him great satisfaction was that he managed to win 10 times in his career. The Spanish player who after the Foro Italico will decide whether to play at Roland Garros in the long distance of three sets out of five, was drawn in Rome in the last quarter of the draw. The one whose main seeds are the Polish Hubert Hurkacz and the Russian Daniil Medvedev. The Spanish player, 22 times Slam champion in the first round will challenge an opponent from the qualifiers, and in case of success in the second round there would be the challenge against Hurkacz.
Paolo Bertolucci shares his preview on Rafa’s path in Rome
As mentioned, Rafa will probably play his last tournament in Rome. The Internazionali BNLÂ d’Italia, which he won 10 times, is, together with the Roland Garros, Barcelona and Monte-Carlo, the Spaniard’s favorite event, where he expressed himself at the best of his career. After the round of 32 in Barcelona and the round of 16 in Madrid, Nadal will try to move forward, pushing himself a little further, in Rome, to try to improve his physical form for the Roland Garros. According to Paolo Bertolucci, former tennis player now commentator on Sky Sport, it won’t be easy to see him through. Trying to analyze his path in Rome, after his debut against a qualified tennis player, Rafa could immediately come across the Polish Hubert Hurkacz. Then the possible challenge with one of Thiago Seyboth Wild or Sebastian Baez. If he gets there, the round of 16 could pit the Spaniard against his first major opponent, Holger Rune.
“Difficult in the quarterfinals, but don’t despair,” the commentator wrote on X, giving his opinion on where the Spanish champion will go in the Italian ATP Masters 1000.
“I won ten titles and experienced great emotions. I dreamed of playing at least once in all the tournaments where I won a lot, and Rome is clearly one of them. I want to go there, try to do well, to be competitive and I will work hard to make this happen,” Nadal said at the media day in Rome.
Rafa, together with Novak Djokovic, will be the real stars of this tournament, even considering the absence of the young Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, both knocked out after the last intense period of play.
