Red Sox legend Luis Tiant dies at 83


One of the best pitchers in Boston Red Sox history has died.

Former right-hander Luis Tiant died at 83, WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche confirmed Tuesday. No cause of death was immediately given.

Tiant, nicknamed “El Tiante,” pitched in Major League Baseball for 19 seasons. He spent most of his career with the Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. Tiant also had brief stints with the Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and California Angels.

The Cuban-born Tiant had a career record of 229–172 with a 3.30 ERA. His 2,416 strikeouts rank 48th all-time in MLB. Tiant also had an impressive 49 career shutouts.

Tiant was a three-time MLB All-Star and led the American League in ERA twice — once with Cleveland in 1968 and again with the Red Sox in 1972. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997.
