Rublev to Face Auger-Aliassime in Madrid Final

Friday’s action at the Madrid Open saw No. 7 seed Andrey Rublev reach Sunday’s final, defeating No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-3.

Needing one hour and nine minutes to advance, Rublev struck five aces, won 83 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on three occasions.

Improving to 4-5 against Fritz in lifetime meetings, Rublev will next face Felix Auger-Aliassime on the title on Sunday. The Canadian advanced to the finals after his opponent Jiri Lehecka was forced to retire at 3-all in the first set. The Czech star suffered a back injury and couldn’t continue.

Rublev will take a 4-1 head-to-head lead against Auger-Aliassime when they meet on Sunday.

Saturday schedule of play will feature the women’s final. Top seed Iga Swiatek will take on No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Swiatek leads the series lead over Sabalenka 6-3. Sabalenka is the reigning Australian Open champion, while Swiatek is the defending French Open winner.
