Swiatek Defeats Osaka at French Open; Alcaraz Advances

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek won a classic encounter at the French Open on Wednesday, defeating four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka 7-6(1), 1-6, 7-5.

In nearly three hours on court, Swiatek overcome a 4-1 deficit in the third set to record her second victory against Osaka in three meetings.

Striking 37 winners and breaking serve on three occasions, Swiatek will next face either Jana Fett or Marie Bouzkova for a fourth round appearance.

Elsewhere, No. 3 seed Coco Gauff, No. 8 seed Ons Jabeur, and American Sofia Kenin all reached the third round. Kenin ended the hopes of local favourite and No. 21 seed Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-3.

Alcaraz Made to Work

No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz needed four sets and three hours and nine minutes to dismiss Jesper De Jong 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Alcaraz, who is looking to win his first French Open title this year, will next face either Sebastian Korda or Soonwoo Kwon.

Other high-profile men’s winners on the day included No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev and No. 9 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Thursday’s action in Paris will feature No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka and fan-favourite Gael Monfils.
