Billie Jean King Cup Finals tournament director Conchita Martinez has his expectations for Emma Raducanu as the former world No. 1 believes the 21-year-old could be one of the main attractions at the event.
After making her BJK Cup debut in 2022, the British tennis star didn’t play again until the qualifiers in April when she led her nation to an away win over France. Now, the 2021 US Open champion is also set to represent Great Britain in Malaga between November 13-20.
This year, Raducanu clinched her first two top-10 wins and also made her first semifinal since 2022.
“For any team, you want to have your best players, and Emma, we have seen she can play amazing tennis. She’s one of the best tennis players out there with great results. It’s great that Great Britain can count on her and I think that when she’s played before, she’s passionate for her country. I think it’s going to be great. I love that she is coming and I can’t wait to see her play,” 1994 Wimbledon champion Martinez said.
Raducanu on track to play the BJK Cup Finals despite an injury setback
In the opening week of the Asian swing, the former world No. 10 sustained a ligament injury to her foot and hasn’t played since. But earlier this week, her team confirmed that everything is set for her to play at the BJK Cup Finals.
“Emma is training well and being with the team next week is her focus,” the Briton’s team said in a statement.
In Malaga, Raducanu will be joined by Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart, Olivia Nichols and Heather Watson.
On November 15th, Great Britain will take on Germany in the last-16 stage, with the winner then meeting defending champions Canada in the quarterfinal.
It remains to be seen how far Raducanu and Co. can go in Malaga.
