The Extinction Rebellion climate change protest caused stress for Scottie Scheffler

The Travelers Championship is a tournament from which fans had huge expectations. The winner of this tournament was Scottie Scheffler, continuing his great form, but that was not the only moment that marked this tournament.

The Travelers Championship brought much excitement this year, particularly when ‘Extinction Rebellion’ activists stormed the 18th green during the final round’s closing moments. They ran onto the golf course wearing shirts with the slogan ‘No golf on a dead planet,’ expressing their concern over climate change, biodiversity loss, and fear of social and ecological collapse. 

Their actions were not well-received by the crowd and players, who were anxious about what might happen. Fortunately, the police quickly intervened and stopped them. 

Afterward, the final round continued, and Scottie Scheffler secured the victory. 

Among those on the golf course was Akshay Bhatia, a golfer participating in the final round with Tom Kim and Scottie Scheffler. Bhatia was especially frightened, not understanding what was happening. No one could grasp the activists’ intentions.

“I was scared for my life. I didn’t even really know what was happening. But thankfully the cops were there and kept us safe, because that’s, you know, that’s just weird stuff.”- Bhatia said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

Scottie Scheffler was also surprised, not knowing what was happening. Such an event could have disrupted his plans and affected his game. However, it did not. Scheffler would have been disappointed if he had lost the final round due to this incident. While many support the movement and organization, they also emphasize that such actions are unacceptable. The biggest issue was that many people didn’t understand what was happening and feared the worst possible scenarios.

“When something like that happens, you don’t really know what’s happening, so it can kind of rattle you a little bit.

That can be a stressful situation, and you would hate for the tournament to end on something weird happening because of a situation like that.”- Scottie Scheffler said.

The great American who won his sixth PGA Tour title this season pointed out that the situation was very strange. Few people expected that the activists of this organization would decide on such a move, and at this very tournament. Scheffler immediately noticed one person out of the corner of his eye, and then many others went to the golf course. 

The most important thing for Scheffler is that the police reacted adequately and solved the problem immediately. There will certainly be increased precautionary measures in the upcoming tournaments, given that there is a fear that this group will do the same thing again.

“Yeah, it was definitely a bit weird.

I saw one person out of the corner of my eye, and then I saw about five police officers sprinting around. From my point of view, they got it taken care of pretty dang fast, and so we were very grateful for that. It seemed to go by really quickly to us.”- he continued.

Extinction Rebellion issued a statement after the incident, stressing that climate change was responsible for the electrical storm that injured two people near the tournament course. They believe that golf, a sport reliant on good weather, should make its fans realize the importance of promoting environmental awareness.

Tom Kim, a young golfer who did a great job in the final round, is disappointed with the approach of this organization, which left several marks on the greens, creating a problem for him and Scheffler. The most important thing in the whole story, Kim believes, is that the police reacted at the right time and stopped individuals from this organization.

Extinction Rebellion

Extinction Rebellion is a movement that originated in the UK out of frustration with the government’s lack of action to educate citizens and youth about the importance of the climate system and the risks of ecological collapse. This organization was founded six years ago by Gail Bradbrook, Simon Bramwell, Stuart Basden, and Roger Hallam. They have staged several large protests, most notably outside the British Parliament at the end of 2018. 

Since then, the movement has grown, having a large number of members today. While they have emphasized that their protests are non-violent and conducted with caution, such situations certainly produce fear among those present, in this case, the golfers on the golf course.

It is difficult to determine whether this organization will decide to do the same in the coming period, but the punishments and sanctions that could follow could also influence the leaders of this organization to think carefully about the next steps. Peaceful protests against climate change and the government are always welcome, but this kind of behavior and invasion of the golf course is the last thing anyone wants to see.
