The North American places with the most Oscar winners

What if there was an Oscar awarded to the most talented North American state or city? We went through the history books to find the deserving winner.

With the Oscars taking place on March 3rd, the Betway Team pulled the names of previous winners and counted how many came from each American state and Canadian city. The goal? To find which place has the greatest cinema output of all!

The categories analysed for this research were ‘Best Actor in a Lead Role’, ‘Best Actress in a Lead Role’, ‘Best Supporting Actor’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’, and ‘Best Director’, with all information from the Official Academy Awards Database.

By doing so, we were able to uncover a definitive list of the US States/Canadian Cities with the most Oscar Winners.

And the top 10 looks something like this:

New York leads the way with an incredible 52 winners, while California – the home of Hollywood – is the next best with no less than forty Oscar winners.

There is a significant drop-off thereafter, with Illinois ranking third with seventeen Oscars, followed by New Jersey and Massachusetts with 13 each and Pennsylvania with ten.

Matthew McConaughey’s Texas ranks seventh with nine Oscars, Halle Berry’s Ohio and  Ginger Rogers’ Missouri come in tied in eight and ninth place with eight Oscars, while Julia Roberts’s Georgia completes the top ten with seven Oscar wins.

With no less than five directorial Oscar wins coming in addition to Oscars for greats like Robin Williams, the state has certainly played its part in the glorious history of US cinema.

But who could forget the contribution of fourth placed state New Jersey and its production of stars like Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, or fifth placed Massachusetts and its plethora of supporting role stars.

So there you have it. Heavy hitters New York and California come out on top in the Oscars charts but Illinois folks can be particularly proud of their output as they’re crowned the best of the rest.

Meanwhile in Canada, Toronto came out on top as the big winner with six Oscars to its name.

Montreal ranked second with three notable winners listed on the Oscars archive website, while Vancouver (James Cameron), Saint John (Walter Pidgeon) and London (Jack L. Warner) all celebrated one Oscars triumph.

With the likes of Timothee Chalamet (New York) and Demi Moore (New Mexico) tipped for top honours this time around, it will be interesting to see which Northern American stars add their names to such a coveted list of winners.
