Top 5 Arsenal v Chelsea matches

5. Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal, Premier League, October 1999

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal finished a distant second to Manchester United in the 1999-2000 Premier League, but the 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge was one of the highlights of the campaign for Gunners fans.

A comeback victory away from home is always special and Arsenal had to dig deep after goals from Tore-Andre Flo and Dan Petrescu had given Chelsea a 2-0 lead.

Wenger threw on substitute Thierry Henry but Nigerian striker Nwankwo Kanu turned the game around, scoring in the 75th and 83rd minutes to level it up at 2-2.

Kanu saved the best until last. After charging down an attempted clearance from Albert Ferrer in injury-time, he skipped past Chelsea goalkeeper Ed de Goey on the byline and completed his hat-trick – and Arsenal’s comeback – with a brilliant finish from the tightest of angles.

4. Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal, Premier League, March 2014

Nearly 15 years after Kanu’s hat-trick heroics, Wenger returned to Stamford Bridge for his 1,000th game in charge of the Gunners.

Arsenal’s celebratory mood did not last long, however, as they were 2-0 down inside seven minutes and things got even worse when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handled the ball on the goal-line.

The Ox’s luckless team-mate Kieran Gibbs was shown the red card in a case of mistaken identity and Eden Hazard’s penalty helped Jose Mourinho’s side go on to win 6-0.

Trivia fans may recall that Chelsea’s rout was completed by Mohamed Salah’s first Premier League goal, while Wenger reflected that his landmark fixture had been “a nightmare” and “one of the worst days of my career”.

3. Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal, Europa League final, May 2019

Unai Emery had already won a hat-trick of Europa League titles with Sevilla when he was appointed as Wenger’s successor at Arsenal and he guided the Gunners to the 2018-19 final.

They faced Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea in Baku – a mere 2,980 miles from London – and the journey home from Azerbaijan must have felt even longer for a dejected Arsenal squad.

Former Gunners striker Olivier Giroud opened the scoring in the 49th minute, sparking a second-half blitz from the Blues. Pedro added a second and Hazard notched twice, either side of Alex Iwobi’s consolation strike for Arsenal.

The one-sided final was not much of a spectacle for neutrals, but Chelsea supporters will have fond memories of their Baku battering of the Gunners.

Sarri left Chelsea for Juventus at the end of the season and Emery did not last much longer at Arsenal, departing in November 2019 after a Europa League defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

2. Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea, FA Cup final, May 2002

Arsenal and Chelsea have met in three FA Cup finals and the Gunners have triumphed on all three occasions, beating the Blues 2-0 in 2002 and 2-1 in both 2017 and 2020.

The 2002 final was a slow-burning encounter and goalkeepers David Seaman and Carlo Cudicini were rarely troubled in the first three-quarters of the game.

A cracking long-range strike from Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour broke the deadlock in the 70th minute before Freddie Ljungberg sealed victory with a superb individual goal 10 minutes later.

Four days later, Sylvain Wiltord’s winner against Manchester United at Old Trafford meant the rampant Gunners completed the league and cup double.

1. Chelsea 3-5 Arsenal, Premier League, October 2011

The 2011-12 season ended up as a glorious one for Chelsea, who beat Liverpool in the FA Cup final and defeated Bayern Munich to lift the Champions League.

Early in the campaign, though, the Blues were blown away by Arsenal in a pulsating eight-goal Premier League thriller at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea legends Frank Lampard and John Terry scored either side of a Robin van Persie tap-in to give the hosts a 2-1 half-time lead.

Arsenal hit back through Andre Santos and Theo Walcott before a fine strike from Juan Mata made it 3-3 heading into the last five minutes.

But Van Persie had the final word, pouncing on a Terry slip to put the Gunners 4-3 up and completing his hat-trick with an emphatic finish in injury-time after being set up by current Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
