Top 5 best Tottenham v Man City matches

From classic cup ties to seven-goal thrillers, there have been some epic matches between Spurs and Manchester City in recent years.

The very first match between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur was a 4-3 away win for the London side in the FA Cup first round in 1908-09 and that contest set the tone for games between the teams.

There have been a number of memorable matches between them over the years and, after Spurs’ stunning 4-0 win over the champions at the Etihad Stadium in November, the head-to-head battle between the teams is level with 68 wins for each team and 37 draws.

With the next meeting between the teams coming up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday, 26th February, we have picked out five of the best clashes between the teams.

When do Tottenham play Man City?

The next Tottenham v Man City match will be played on Wednesday 26 February at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

The game will be the second meeting of the two sides in the 2024/25 Premier League season, after Spurs beat City 4-0 in November’s reverse fixture.

Spurs were underdogs in the football betting for that fixture but pulled off the upset in stunning fashion, and they’ll be seeking an unlikely double against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Greatest Tottenham v Man City matches

5. Tottenham 3 Manchester City 2 – May 1991 – FA Cup Final replay

The first match many older football fans will think of when considering classic encounters between Manchester City and Tottenham is the FA Cup final replay between the teams in 1981.

Even the final went to a replay in those days and so, five days after a 1-1 draw after extra-time on the Saturday afternoon, the teams reconvened at Wembley on the following Thursday night for a floodlit replay.

City were far from the powerhouse they are now. They finished 12th in Division One that season, having been 17th the year before and were only two seasons away from being relegated.

Spurs were 10th in the top-flight that year and both were hungry for a cup triumph as Spurs had not won the trophy since 1967 and City were in the final for the first time since their victory in 1969.

It was the 100th FA Cup final and the original match was unusual in that City midfielder Tommy Hutchison scored for both teams, putting his side ahead after 30 minutes, but then deflecting in a Glenn Hoddle free-kick for Spurs’ 79th-minute equaliser.

The replay was a classic as first City came from a goal behind to lead 2-1 before two late Spurs goals gave them the trophy.

An eighth-minute goal for Tottenham’s Argentinian midfielder Ricky Villa was cancelled out by a Steve MacKenzie strike just three minutes later.

City were ahead early in the second half through a Kevin Reeves penalty, but this time Spurs hit back with a 70th-minute goal by striker Garth Crooks.

With the destiny of the cup on a knife-edge, Villa settled the final with a sensational solo goal, jinking past four defenders before rolling the ball home.

4. Tottenham 3 Manchester City 4 – February 2004 – FA Cup fourth-round replay

Replays clearly bring out the best in these teams as their fourth-round tie in the 2003-04 season was another cracker.

After a 1-1 draw in the original match, Spurs and City served up the ultimate game of two halves at White Hart Lane.

Spurs went ahead through defender Ledley King in just the second minute and were 3-0 up by half-time after further goals from Robbie Keane and Christian Ziege.

When City’s Joey Barton was sent off for two yellow cards just before the break, the game seemed to be over.

However, 10-man City roared back after the interval and were level after 80 minutes thanks to goals from Sylvain Distin, Paul Bosvelt and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Their sensational comeback was completed in the 90th minute when striker Jon Macken made it 4-3 to cap an incredible turnaround.

3. Manchester City 3 Tottenham 2 – January 2012 – Premier League

The teams produced two wild games in the 2011-12 season, with City winning 5-1 in London as striker Edin Dzeko scored four times, but the return match in Manchester was one to savour too.

A goalless first half gave little indication of the mayhem to come as the teams then scored four goals between them in just nine minutes.

City’s Samir Nasri broke the deadlock after 56 minutes and Joleon Lescott made it 2-0 after 59, but by the 65th minute Spurs were level after goals from Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale.

Everything then looked to have calmed down again but there was a late twist as Mario Balotelli’s 90th-minute penalty gave City the points.

2. Manchester City 4 Tottenham 3 – April 2019 – Champions League quarter-final second leg

Few fans of either team will need reminding about this modern classic. A late Son Heung-Min goal had given Spurs a 1-0 lead from the first leg and there was an explosive start to the second leg as City led 3-2 after just 21 minutes.

Raheem Sterling put City in front before Son struck twice to make it 2-1 to Spurs after 10 minutes. Bernardo Silva levelled the match scores almost immediately before Sterling’s second left Spurs ahead on the away-goals rule only.

City got their noses in front in the tie when a 59th-minute Sergio Aguero strike put them 4-3 up on aggregate, but Fernando Llorente made the decisive contribution for the visitors after 73 minutes and Spurs were able to hang on for a memorable European success.

1. Manchester City 2 Tottenham 3 – February 2022 – Premier League

Amazingly, there have been goals in the 88th minute or later in six of the last eight meetings between the teams and the pick of those contests was Spurs’ 3-2 away win in the 2021-22 Premier League, which saw added-time goals for both teams.

Dejan Kulusevski scored his first goal for Spurs after just four minutes, but an Ilkay Gundogan goal saw the scores level at the break. Harry Kane gave the visitors the advantage just before the hour mark but there was plenty of late drama to come.

A Riyad Mahrez penalty after a handball by Cristian Romero looked to have earned City a point two minutes into added time, but the clock kept running and three minutes later Kane headed home the winner from a Kulusevski cross.
