Greatest Liverpool v Man City matches

5. Manchester City 2-3 Liverpool – October 2008 – Premier League

City were in control of this clash back in 2008 as first-half goals from Stephen Ireland and a brilliant Javier Garrido free-kick put Mark Hughes’ side 2-0 in front at the break.

However, Liverpool came storming back in the second half, scoring three times to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Fernando Torres pounced inside the penalty area to halve the deficit on 55 minutes before Pablo Zabaleta was sent off for the hosts for a lunge on Xabi Alonso.

That handed the visitors the initiative and, with an extra man, they were soon level when Torres struck again with 17 minutes to go.

With the game in the balance, Dirk Kuyt pounced in stoppage time to smash home the winner as Rafa Benitez’s side celebrated a memorable comeback success.

4. Manchester City 1-4 Liverpool – November 2015 – Premier League

Seven years later, there was another superb away win for the Reds to enjoy as the Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool was given lift-off at the Etihad.

Klopp’s team went in front thanks to an early Eliaquim Mangala own goal and they stunned the hosts with a second through Philippe Coutinho midway through the first half.

When Roberto Firmino added a third soon after Liverpool were in dreamland and on their way to a statement win.

Sergio Aguero pulled one back just before the break and both sides wasted further chances before Martin Skrtel’s strike sealed it for the visitors with nine minutes left.

3. Manchester City 5-0 Liverpool – September 2017 – Premier League

In autumn 2017, City enjoyed a stunning home victory over their rivals as a five-star show left Liverpool reeling.

Aguero put the home side ahead and when Sadio Mane was sent off shortly after, the writing was on the wall for Klopp’s men.

The visitors couldn’t cope with City’s awesome firepower as a brace from Gabriel Jesus extended City’s advantage further, before Leroy Sane got in on the act with a double of his own.

2. Manchester City 1-2 Liverpool – April 2018 – Champions League

Liverpool were leading 3-0 from the first leg of this Champions League quarter-final showdown when they headed to the Etihad braced for a City comeback.

Pep Guardiola’s team got off to the perfect start when Jesus scored inside three minutes and for long spells City were on top as they looked to claw their way back into the tie.

However, Liverpool struck through Mohamed Salah early in the second half to take the game away from City and Firmino’s winner on the night secured an overall 5-1 aggregate victory to keep the Reds on course for the final.

1. Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool – January 2019 – Premier League

This game was billed as pivotal in the title race and so it proved as City secured a narrow win which set up a thrilling scrap between the two rivals at the top of the table in the second half of the season, from which City eventually prevailed.

After John Stones had cleared the ball off the line early on, Aguero’s goal just before half-time put the hosts in front before Firmino equalised in an end-to-end affair in the second half.

Sane delivered the winner for Guardiola’s team with 18 minutes to go and the victory reduced the gap on Liverpool at the top at the time to four points.

It gave City the hope they could recover and, in the end, Guardiola’s men edged to the title by just a point a few months later.
