Wimbledon 2024 Day Six Recap

More rain fell on day six of Wimbledon, but thankfully, it abated during the afternoon, and all the matches could be completed.

Of yesterday’s postponed matches, Danill Medvedev polished off his match in a fourth-set tiebreak against Jan Lennard Struff.

While Roberto Bautista Agut, Ugo Humbert, and Ben Shelton won their matches in five sets, it was the 14th-seeded American’s third in a row, with Roger Federer in the stands for his one.

From the scheduled matches, only Fritz and Zverev were able to get it done in straight sets. Djokovic, Musetti, and Mpetshi Perricard needed four, while Rune and Fils had to get the job done in five, the former coming down from two sets to love.

Zverev Negates Norrie

Cam Norrie played a flawless match against Jack Draper in his third round but couldn’t produce the goods against Sacha Zverev, who came through 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(15) to book his spot in the fourth round.

The fourth-seeded German took a nasty tumble midway through the second set, which appeared to tweak his left knee. He required a couple of medical treatments but managed to steady himself and came through a marathon tie-break 17-15 in the third.

Even though Zverev looked hampered in his movement at times, his first serve is now a real weapon. It allowed him to remain aggressive on return, keeping the pressure on Norrie throughout the two-and-a-half-hour match.

Zverev won 90 per cent (66/73) of his first-serve points and did not face a break point while converting two of his eight break-point opportunities.

He has yet to lose serve or drop a set this tournament, and if his knee isn’t an issue once the adrenaline has worn off, he’s got a decent shot at making another Slam final.

Djokovic Passes Popyrin

Novak Djokovic faced another tough challenge from Alexei Popyrin, digging deep for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) victory on Centre Court.

The Aussie has a dangerous game for grass with his powerful serve and forehand, and Djokovic had trouble with him earlier this year at the Australian Open.

However, he upped his game when he needed to. After dropping the first set, Djokovic quickly responded, coming through the next three sets.

Djokovic will next face 15th seed Holger Rune, who came back from two sets down to defeat Quentin Halys 1-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-1.
