Wimbledon 2024 Day Two Recap

On day two of Wimbledon, seven-time champion Novak Djokovic got his tournament underway. He started impressively with a straight sets win over Vít Kopřiva on Centre Court.

Before play commenced, the expected news arrived that Andy Murray couldn’t play singles at his last Wimbledon. He withdrew from his match against Tomas Machac to be replaced by David Goffin, but he’s still in the doubles draw, which starts later this week.

Has he earned the right to leave it until the last possible minute, or does it make a mockery of the sport? What do you think? Does it also show how garbage the doubles game is, considering he can partake in that with brother Jamie yet can hardly move?

Elsewhere on the court, there were two seeded casualties, with Rublev and Korda both crashing out. The weather had the final say, with seven matches failing to finish after several rain delays throughout the day.

You can see the full results from day two below.

Djokovic Makes Fast Start

Novak Djokovic took to Centre Court wearing a knee compression sleeve, but he showed no hampered movement, recording a confidence-boosting win as he quickly dispatched Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Despite undergoing knee surgery early last month, Djokovic showed no signs of discomfort during his one-hour, 58-minute win under the roof on centre court. His game looked well-tuned, and the only real sign of him protecting his body was when he opted to fire winners when pushed wide rather than grind.

However, in the baseline exchanges, his directional control was far too good, and he broke Kopriva’s serve twice in each set, extending his perfect record in Wimbledon first-round matches to 19-0.

During the 1 hour 58 minutes on the court, Novak committed just 16 unforced errors and won 90 per cent (35/39) of points behind his first serve. Solid stuff, and he’ll next play wildcard Jacob Fearnley after he won his opener in straight sets.

It was very good. I was very pleased with the way I moved on the court today. Coming into Wimbledon this year was a little bit of a different circumstance for me because of the knee. I didn’t know how everything was going to unfold on the court, really. Practice sessions are quite different to official match play, so I’m just extremely glad about the way I played and the way I felt today I tried to focus on the game and not think too much about the knee,” said Djokovic. “Everything I could possibly do, I have done, along with my team, in the past three and a half weeks in order to give myself a chance to be able to play. I think if it was for any other tournament, I probably wouldn’t risk it or rush it as much, but I just love Wimbledon. Djokovic on his confidence boosting win.

Comesana Leaves Rublev Reeling

Argentina’s Francisco Comesana had a Grand Slam debut to remember, pulling off the upset of the day by defeating No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(5).

Rublev, struggling since his Madrid Masters 1000 win, was in trouble early after losing the first set 6-4. Although he managed to win the second set 7-5, his trademark frustrations became evident in the third set.

After falling behind with a double break, the 26-year-old Russian reacted angrily, repeatedly hitting his knee with his racket.

The outburst was reminiscent of his behaviour during a third-round defeat at the French Open. When that happens, it’s all over, as he’s unable to reset his mind.

Overall, Rublev’s grass-court season has been lacklustre, to say the least. He was eliminated in the first round of the Halle Open and has not won a match since May 29.

Zverev Impresses

Alexander Zverev rapidly started his Wimbledon campaign, easing past Roberto Carballes Baena 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 on No. 1 Court.

The German, long a sub-par server for a man of his height, has improved that stroke in the last two years. He fired 18 aces in a dominant opening performance at a venue where he has yet to reach the quarterfinals.

With his one-hour, 53-minute victory over Carballes Baena, he set up a second-round match against Marcos Giron after the American dispatched British wildcard Henry Searle.

Obviously, first rounds are never easy, but I’m happy with how I started the tournament. I want to compete, I want to do well here at Wimbledon. It’s the most historic tennis tournament that we have. Unfortunately, I’ve struggled over the years here on these beautiful courts, but I feel different this year. I feel very much more into it and alive on these courts, and hopefully, I can show that in the next few matches. Zverev on his hopes to perform at SW19.

Other Matches Of Note

Etcheverry Knocks Off Nardi: I had Nardi facing Djokovic in a rematch from earlier this year. However, it was a good day for Argentine clay courters as Etcheverry dominated in a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win.

Mpetshi Perricard Proves Too Good for Korda: The Frenchman only entered the main draw as a lucky loser, but he took full advantage against Korda, whom I also thought had a realistic shot at the second week given his form heading into Wimbledon but he bowed out at the first hurdle for the second year in a row, losing 6-7, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 3-6.

Hurkacz Aces Albot: A 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win with the help of 24 aces, and the Pole did well to turn it around quickly after a ropey start.

De Minaur Downs Duckworth: A 7-6(1), 7-6(3), 7-6(4) win for the Rosmalen champion, although Duckworth had many chances and should have won at least a set.

Tstisipas Tops Taro Daniel: It was a tricky first round against the Japanese who is capable of causing problems, but the 11th seed came through 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 23 minutes. Tstitsipas increased his aggression at critical moments, hitting 55 winners and frequently finishing points at the net. Can his game hold up on grass where he has less time? Not so sure.
